Family papers, 1826-1937, (bulk 1855-1922).

Letters, legal documents, financial documents, and printed material relating to Orrin S. Levis's activities as a merchant in Iowa (mid 1850s), a miner in Colorado (1860-1861), and a businessman in New York (1880s). Also included are letters, printed material, and photographs pertaining to his son, Charles William Levis, a farm equipment salesman in the midwest (1897-1922). Printed material concerning Orrin Levis's stepson, artist Frederic Remington, is also included. A large number of family photographs are contained in the collection (1870s-1920s).

Frederic Remington was born October 4, 1861 in Canton, New York. He was educated at the Vermont Episcopal Institute and attended Yale University. He worked as a cowboy, scout, and ran a sheep and mule ranch in the west. He married Eva Caten on October 1, 1884. Remington was a painter, sculptor and illustrator of Indians, cowbnoys and the American soldier at war. His travels took him to Germany, Russia, North Africa, Cuba and all over North America.
